Avengers: Endgame wasn’t the end. Eleven more Marvel movies are set to be released over the next two years. Combine that with Toy Story 4, the DC Comics Films, Star Wars’ never-ending saga and all of Disney’s remakes of animated films into live-action films (ala Lion King, Dumbo, Alladin, etc.) and you really have to wonder if Hollywood is simply out of new ideas.
I won’t deny that the Avengers series exceeded my expectations with the last two or three movies, but really?!?! Eleven more?
More books are being written than ever, but Hollywood continues to hit us with the same stuff over and over. There have been few truly original hits in the last several years, The Shack is one that comes to mind, along with George R.R. Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice/ Game of Thrones. Several great books have been optioned and even gone into production, but have fizzled out due to a lack of funding. John Lyman’s ‘God’s Lions’ series is one of those; a great series whose first movie adaption has languished for more than five years.
Perhaps it’s the studios simply not caring about telling great stories anymore, perhaps it is because they spend so much time focusing on political correctness and weaken the few original books that they have tried to adapt in recent years. Perhaps it is simply greed.
Whatever the motives, expect to continue seeing sequels and remakes on the big screen and rehashed tv shows on the small screen for the near future. Hollywood producers and studio executives need to stop read screen treatments & scripts and start reading books again.
Of course, I am a writer and a bibliophile, so I might be a bit biased. That doesn’t mean that I am wrong.
